So, you want to record Last.fm?

Here's some suggestions on making sure it works.  Because you are using third part site like last.fm, it's a bit more work than recording Shoutcast.
  • Using IE, be able to log into Last.fm, click on a station, and listen to the station via the external player.  This is probably the most critical item - if you can't use Internet Explorer to log in and play with the external player, then StationRipper won't record for you.
  • Make SURE you userid and password, that you enter into StationRIpper, is valid.  Right now, there is no error if it's wrong (it will just not record).
  • If you don't have .NET 2.0, download and install it.  If you have it, we've seen it messed up on some computers.  You may want to reinstall it.
  • If you have any firewall software, make sure LastFMConsole.exe and StationRipper.exe has outbound access.  If things aren't working you might want to disable it and see if that fixes it (re-enable after you test!)
Please, before posting any questions here about not being able to record, make sure you've done all of the above.

This DOES WORK, but everything has to be set up correctly

Known Issues:
  • Tag, Genre, etc info is not 100% being used.
  • Some stations will record for a bit and stop.  You can start it up manually.  This will be fixed in the next version
  • You can't listen to Last.fm stations while it is recording (either by double clicking on it in StationRipper) or just on their web site or player.  A relay client will be in the next version, which will allow for this.

Hai Greg....I do...I found through Shoutcast RockRadio1, a station for ClassicRock with only 192k/ps mp3 songs....I have ripped already nearly 5 gigabyte in 2 days......day and night.....and made his radiostation through a banner THE internetradiostation of my own sites/fora!

I'm sure you are sick of this by now, but i just bought your software and i am not able to get last.fm to record.

 

i have followed your instructions. I can listen through IE7, have dl the ex player, however i am not able to reinstall .net 2. I get errors. But it is installed.

 

SR will attempt to rip last.fm when i click on play recommendations, but an error will pop up saying "LastFMConsole has encountered an error and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

if you have any ideas let me know plz

Sorry you ran into trouble.

Does it record for a bit, or just come up with this right away?

Could you go to View->Options, Advanced tab and check "Show StationRipper Console". 

Does that give any more info?

after reading what i wrote, and finding that the sniffer did the same thing i decided to look into the .net issue more. I will post my findings in case anyone else runs into this prob.

I'm not sure how it got messed up to begin with, but i couldn't uninstall it for anything; through the control panel to repair or uninstall, i even tried to download and install it that way to no avail,  using the registry to find the uninstaller (it wasn't there), etc....

I found a program called windows install clean up. that removed it and allowed me to reinstall. That program is not dummy proof, so if anyone tries to use it, be careful, you can cause lots of problems with a misclick.

StationRipper started ripping last.fm upon restarting my machine.

By the way, i love what your program does, the way it works, how easy it is to use, and the fact that you offer prompt support via your forum. If anyone is on the fence about paying for it, DO IT! Great stuff here.

Well, I *can* record.  I see the figures going up, both at the bottom of the screen, and in the console.  At the moment, it says 4 tracks finished of a total 4, 20Mb, and is still ripping.

But it doesn't seem to save!

It appears from the insructions that it should save automatically, but the output folder is empty.  This is my third attempt, I have no idea where the output could be going...

I am using a Spanish language version of Vista, if that makes any difference.

If that doesn't help, click the "?" next to force to podcasts - it should say what it's doing with each song.

Just one small point, in
http://www.stationripper.com/wiki/Vista.ashx
you have the path slightly wrong, you say
C:\Users\your_account\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\StationRipper\ (where your_account is your username)
but it's
C:\Users\your_account\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Ratajik Software\StationRipper\ (where your_account is your username)
on my computer - your path misses out \Ratajik Software\

Hi Greg!

Just purchased StationRipper to record Last.FM streams. Cannot record yet. Already read all the related forum topics. Even reinstalled .Net 2.0 as stated in a post. Currently getting following error:

I'm sorry but there was a Record Error.
Ripper 0 (http://www.last.fm/listen/artist/Fourplay/similarartists) reported a error:
Could not connect to the stream. Try checking that the stream is up and that your proxy settings are correct. . Killing stream.

System details:
Windows XP SP2
Zone Alarm configured (even shutdown without success)
Console does not provide much info (just says "Connecting..." at the bottom)

Please help! Many thanks!

First, I would make sure to read this: http://www.stationripper.com/wiki/Recording_LastFM.ashx

And make SURE that you are setting up everthing in Internet Explorer - you should be able to go to a station in IE, click play, and have the external player play the song (if that's not working, StationRipper won't be able to record).

I've been running StationRipper for about two weeks now with no problem. All of a sudden, tonight I'm seeing an error that says "ERROR, unable to get stream to last.fm. killing stream".

I'm not doing anything differently than I have before, and standard IE browser window still pops up my external palyer with no problem and it runs perfectly.

Tried your suggestions in

Followed them step by step.

1. Can log into Last.fm from IE, click on a station, and listen to the station via the external player. (downloaded player, modified playback options in website settings)
2. Userid and password are valid.
3. DOTNET 2.0 installed (reinstalled)
4. Configured ZoneAlarm to grant access to StationRipper. Even tried with ZoneAlarm shut down.

I still cannot rip Last.fm streams.

Seems that Last.fm tweaked their streaming protocol a bit lately.

Will appreciate your kind help.

I had a chance to work on this tonight.

I've got a beta of the working Last.fm ripper up. As it's 100% broken in the old one, I've just included this new version in the main download (so just re-download and you'll get it).

I'll be testing it over the weekend. If you have a chance to try it, please let me know if it works for you.

Just ripped one song from one last.fm stream. Looking good. I've started multiple streams and will leave them running for a while. If you don't hear back from me, that means things are working. Let me know if you want me to test anything specific.
