StationRipper was first released on Dec 13, 2003. It’s great to see it’s still going strong, even though I wouldn’t have guessed it would be when I first wrote it – I’ve done my best to keep it up to date with newer technologies, so guess I’m not THAT surprised :)
I’ve released a new version of the sniffer. It can be found here: http://www.stationripper.com/release/SR_V2.93SS.exe This version continues to improve on the new SmartStationSniffer. It should be correctly tagging, naming is better, and should work for more sites. While I’m still looking for feedback and bugs, one of the big things I’m looking for in this release is - what web 2.0 stations does this new version work with? The focus has been on Pandora - but it should work with most… If you run into a problem, please include: 1. What you were doing when it happened. 2. Any error messages that you saw. 3. Copy the last screen of info from SmartStationSniffer.exe console, if available. 4. Copy the last 50 or so lines of the SmartStationSniffer.txt. You can put the above info as a response to this message, or fill out a support request with the info, here: http://www.stationripper.com/regrequest.htm I appreciate any and all help testing this. This is using some really new things to record, so I want to have a solid beta before releasing it. Thanks! -Greg ------------------- Info on running: To run: 1. Download from and install http://www.stationripper.com/release/SR_V2.93SS.exe 2. Run StationRipper. 3. Go to the View->Options, Advanced tab and check "Show StationRipper console". This is optional, but this will help to make sure things are running ok. 4. Under View->Options, Sniffer tab, check "Record all Possible Music". This is also optional, but I recommend to really test it. If you don't do this, only a handful of sites will work. Checking it will let the sniffer record for most Web 2.0 sites. 5. Under View menu, there is a new option, "Start SmartStationSniffer". At this point, you should see a black window come up. If everything installed correctly and things are working, it should say "SSR has loaded and is running". If it doesn't say this, note any errors - also bring up the SmartStationSniffer.txt file and copy the contents of that. Post that info here, or fill out a reg request and send it in, so I can figure out what's up. If you browse to Pandora, you should see some things happen in that black window, and then it will say it saved the song - and that info will show up in StationRipper. Try other sites - some may not get the song name, but most will get the media file. Edited by gratajik - 25March2010 at 9:59pm |

So I was recording Pandora with the new one (works great, thanks) - and was mucking around on Lala later.. and noticed StationRipper was downloading all the Lala songs I was listening to...
Holy shiat, so this new ripper DOES download Lala?!?!? So StationRipper + Lala = Napster!?!?! ROFL! And as Google is using Lala.. Hahahah, that's great! THANKS! GREAT JOB!!!! JA |

I hadn't tested it against Lala. Not sure if I'd compare to Napster.... even though picking a song and downloading is not the intent of StationRipper (it's meant to record internet radio, where the broadcaster picks the songs. Pandora still falls under that, as you can't pick the actual song, just kinda nudge in the direction of music you like).

There’s been an important update on where StationRipper puts its files.
StationRipper has always been self-contained – everything it used was inside of its installed directory or below, plus a few registry entries. This made it very easy to move, and was considered well behaved in the pre-Vista days. Microsoft decided, with Vista and Windows 7, that apps that used to be well-behaved were no longer, in that they severely limited what the app is allowed to do in its own directory. I personally question what they did here – while I understand it’s a great idea to limit access to the users program files, I strongly disagree with how they did it (limited what the app can do in its OWN directory). As I don’t have much control over MS… I’ve made a change to StationRipper, on where it decides to initially choose its output and work files. If you clean-install StationRipper, it will now: - Create a directory in Documents, “StationRipper”. - Will copy the MDB (DB) file from the original install directory and place it in that newly created directory. While the original one will be in the install dir, it will use the one in Documents. - Create a directory in Music, “StationRipper”, and two directories under that, “output” and “work”. - When recording, it will now use those new directories. These directories are generally in c:\users\yourusername\Documents and c:\users\yourusername\Music If you want to change the paths StationRipper uses, you can always go to View->Options, and change the paths there. If you already have StationRipper installed, then it will use whatever paths you already have. Thanks, -Greg |

Greg,
A few things to note regarding the SSR beta: 1. SmartStationSniffer (SSS) does not require the proxy feature to be turned on in FireFox. It should be turned off unless using the older Station Sniffer. Is there a reason to use the older Station Sniffer over SSS? 2. SSS does not leave album art .jpg files behind (yeah!) 3. When recording using the old Station Sniffer with the Premium Option "Copy Duplicates" turned off, it would show 0 bytes in the track size field on the Station Sniffer track for any file that wasn't copied. With SSS, now one needs to go to the Recording Info button for that. 4. Genre is not coming through at first. I have the "Accept StationRipper Genre", but I'm using FireFox, not the portal. Once I reset the default genre to Jazz (from Blues as it was set), Jazz started to come through in the files. Question: Is it still recommended to use Firefox with Pandora or is the built-in browser working as well? Jim |

To clarify item #4 in my last post, the genre field is coming through on the SR on-screen track info while recording but not at all in the file ID3 tags.

Greg, this has been an issue even on 2.93, but the bit rate in the SR track recording screen is erroneously showing Pandora 192 Kbit tracks as 128 Kbits.
A side note on the forum: I found out the hard way that the Captcha code has to be reloaded if one takes too long to compose a post. If not, the entire post is lost and a "code didn't match" error appears even when the code matches. JimC |

Further testing with Smart Station Sniffer with Pandora is showing it to be much more reliable in picking up song names and not going into a pandora_996a9s6d96a9s696a79.mp3 rut than Station Sniffer with proxy.
A couple issues though: 1. SSS stopped recording at one point after an hour or so with no errors, no lock-ups, just wouldn't detect a stream. Had to remove and restart SSS. The problem hasn't returned after runing many hours. 2. In a 2 hour recording session, 2 songs failed. One did end up as a pandora_0sd0f9sd09fsdfs.mp3 file (first one!) with no ID3 tag info and the other picked up the file name, but not ID3 tag info. Both of these showed exit code 3 in the SSS console. Huge improvement over the babysitting I've had to do with Station Sniffer! JimC |

I'm seeing another issue with SSS that was also present in v2.93 with Station Sniffer and that is if the album art isn't acquired properly, the last album art is used and applied to an unrelated song. It'd be best to have no album art vs. the wrong one.

On #1, if that happens again, could you go to Task Manager and see if "SmartStationSniffer.exe" is still listed? You can also go to View->Options, Advanced Tab and check "Show StationRipper console". (And then, when it happens ago, verify it's still up, and if it is, see if any other errors are shown).
It's still possible for it to miss songs, but it should be greatly reduced. I'll continue to look at improving that. Didn't know about the art issue - thanks, I'll take a look. Thanks for the testing - I'd like to look at releasing, but want it to be working as best as it can - and the more people who use the beta, the better :) -Greg |

Hi ... Very excited about the new smart sniffer since alot of the times I am not getting the song names from Pandora or Slacker. When I install the new smart sniffer or the new beta stationripper which includes the smart sniffer, my internet connection gets blocked. When I diagnose the connection problem it says "Windows has detected a problem with the following layered service provider (LSP) Ratajik Software. I am running XP .... Internet explorer will fix the problem which requires a reboot and then I can run the regular sniffer. Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

Greg,
I just had the problem again where recording just stops (issue #1 in prev post). Was recording for what I thought was 7 hours, but upon inspection, SSS stopped after 5 hours. Again, there were no error msgs. on the SSS console, and the last song it did completed successfully. SmartStationSniffer.exe is still running in task manager and it is sucking up 50% CPU and 663,000 MB of RAM. Earlier in the recording session I saw some strange things not seen before. The "What Happened To My Songs" window showed "warning" for two separate files. "Song finished but couldn't copy - It may be incomplete? The song was supposed to be copied from X.mp3 to Y.mp3". the stream was Pnadora. In the message X and Y were two separate song ames and X should not have been trying to copy to Y! SSS skipped the song as far as recording goes and continued successfully recording other songs for another 4 hours before it stopped. I also saw a strange file name listed in the "What Happened To My Song?" window. Four times it logged that the file name was mozilla-mirror.3347.voxcdn.com_2462482(long #).mp3 and didn't write it to the output directory. The stream was stationsniffer oddly enough. Hope that helps! Jim |

The last thing (the mozzila) was the sniffer thinking it found a media file, but didn't (probably too small)
Not sure ont he stopping - if you restart, does it pick up again? I *AM* seeing a issue with memory - tracking that down (which may be related) Thanks, -Greg |

I have not seen that before. Do you have more details of exactly what the error said, and what it said when it fixed it? |
