Same as before on this every growing thread, your application says there is an mdac error or cannot connect to the database. Once I clear that box, your application resumes recording.

The Database Problem panel referencing MDAC keeps occurring randomly. Sometime early this morning it happened again, and I only know about it when I login remotely to my server. I've grabbed a screen shot of it, please see the screenshot uploaded to http://www.interactivevillages.com/SRMDAC.jpg

Let me know what can be done, this is frustrating!!

StationRipper uses MS Access via MDAC. As MS moved it to part of windows, if it fries, I don't have a way to just fix it, beyond the tool I pointed you to.

If you go to View->Options, Advanced tab and uncheck "memory record" it should at least stop the errors - but a lot of function won't be on any more.

Sorry I don't have a better answer. I'm looking at moving to a non microsoft product, because of the various MDAC issues I've had over the years, but it would be in a future version of StationRipper.

Great, thanks for your prompt reply and thorough explanation. I'm a web developer on Linux and have a dis-affection for Microsoft products, seeing them as a "necessary evil" for doing business. If you stay on windoze, consider using a mysql datbase for storing the data, similar to how Slim Devices does with their Squeeze Server

I'm sorry, I've been off working on the new version, among other things.

Did you ever get to the point where iTunes was updating? And did you turn memory record off (again, this will turn off a lot of things, which may include iTunes)

I agree on the MDAC thing - I have regretted using that for years now. I've looked at alternatives, it's just a mater of getting time to do it.

New version? Great! Count me in for beta if you need testers.

I turned off the memory record but that is when it seemed to stop updating itunes so I turned it back on. What does that feature do anyway?

Also, I have over 1,000 songs in the \work folder, and another 94 in the \incomplete folder, which is under the work folder. These date back to 12/2 Is SR supposed to delete or move these at some point and why is there a work folder, incomplete folder and output folder anyway?

Lastley, at what point does SR actually update the itunes database? Fyi, I recently downloaded a few other ripping apps and cannot find anything as well designed as yours. You should be proud of your work.

Thanks,
Bob

Hi Greg,

I get a "cannot resolve host" error every few days which is stopping the recording. What is causing this and can this be avoided?

Also, asking again, what does turning off Memory Record do/disable?

Thanks,
Bob

Bob - not sure. What were you trying to do when you got that (generally it means StationRipper, on the console, can't communicate with whatever server you are trying to access)

Sorry for the delay on this. Wanted to do something, but had limited time.

So here’s the deal with Memory Record (may be too much info, but the bottom line is I’ve changed how it works in the beta).

One of the big benefits of StationRipper over the other apps like it six years ago was its ability to “remember” what it recorded. The normal flow of using the app is record a ton of stuff, weed through and delete what you know you don’t want to listen to, then listen to what you recorded (hopefully purchasing the music you like!) and then record some more. If the app doesn’t remember what you already recorded, it would get likely get the songs you deleted the first time around – so you have to go through that again with those songs. Not fun.

The first version of StationRipper did “Memory Recording” plus allowed a user to record hundreds of Stations at once – and that’s about it (well, nicer interface, a bit more function, etc). I put in the option on advanced options to disable that Memory Record function.

When you turn it off, and a new song comes in, there’s a big if statement on the function that drives that – checking to see if Memory Record is on or not. If it’s off, it basically skips 99% of the post-record function (min size, copying the file, filtering, etc etc).

While the original intent of that for was correct, six years later it’s not.

SO – I’ve put something in the beta that changes this:

1.     If Memory record is off, it will ONLY skip the check-on-past-recoding feature. Everything else now goes (the “if” is gone)
2.     If Memory record is on, and the DB did not initialize correctly, it will now copy files - do everything but memory record (add station, songs, etc to the DB).

So if you’re having MDAC issues, try again with the beta. If you see any DB errors like before, let me know. You can also turn memory record off now, which should just bypass DB issues.

Also – if the iTunes issues you were having we MDAC related, those should also be resolved.

NOTE: Please read the latest the beta – I’ve also changed some of the start up behavior on where files go. (http://www.stationripper.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=3494&PID=10057#10057)

Thanks,
-Greg

Thanks Greg, I just installed the beta and will let you know if any MDAC errors. I've got it set to Add Completed Files to Itunes and wondering how often SR copies over the files-- does it have a fixed schedule or something?

It adds them as it finishes recording them (right away).

Thanks, it seems that any songs from R.E.M aren't being moved to the \output folder, perhaps due to the dots in the name? H.B.A. is also stuck in the \Work folder with R.E.M, fyi!

Also, there are 62 songs stuck in the incomplete folder, all which are larger than my minimum size, dating back to 12/2 of this year. Is there any way to "force" SR to move them to the \output dir and add to Itunes?

Oh, I just looked in the /output folder and there is a copy of the R.E.M and H.B.A. songs in there, but they are only 1KB in size! A bug??

The Beta version is popping up a warning message every time a song is copied to the Output folder. Can this be turned off?

Also, I got another MDAC error popup, but your appliction kept recording, which is great.

Not sure on the REM/HBA issue - what kind of station were you recording them on (Sniffer, SmartSniffer, or Shoutcast?) If SmartSniffer, then may have a bug (others SHOULD be ok).

If you turn off the "Memory Record" on Advanced, does that get rid of that error?

What is the warning message you get? (MDAC or something else?)

About StationRipper:

StationRipper will allow you to "record" various internet radio stations. It will allow you to get a list of available Shoutcast stations and start recording them, creating a single MP3 file for each song the station plays.

It will also:

* Allow you to record up to 300 streams at one time.
* Buy the music and albums you are ripping.
* "Memory Recording" - It will keep track of all the songs you download, copying the final song file to your music library. If that song gets re-recorded in the future, it will skip it (so, if you end up deleting it, it won't record, bloating your collection with music you don't want).
* Get a list of Stations to record quickly and easily, via Shoutcast.
* Track the music and stations you've ripped.
* Listen to any station being recorded with a single mouse click
* Schedule when you want to allow and disallow recordings, so your bandwidth will only be hit with ripping on off hours.
* Re-launch ripping of up to 100 of the last Stations you've recorded with a single mouse click.
